About Xavier J. Polk, PhD.

Dr. Polk earned his Bachelor of Arts in Developmental Child Psychology from the University of Notre Dame before pursuing advanced graduate training. He received his Ph.D. in Developmental Child Psychology from the University of Kansas in 1986 and completed his pre-doctoral internship at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he specialized in developmental disabilities.

Throughout his career, Dr. Polk has remained committed to helping individuals reach their fullest potential through evidence-based, person-centered care. While his clinical foundation is rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), his approach extends beyond behavior alone. He recognizes that meaningful progress requires understanding the whole person-including emotional well-being, physical health, communication abilities, environmental influences, and family dynamics.

Central to Dr. Polk's philosophy is the development of "core skills"- the foundational abilities that enable individuals to acquire increasingly complex life skills. By strengthening these core competencies, clients are better equipped to expand their learning, improve communication, build meaningful relationships, participate more fully in their communities, and increase vocational and independent living opportunities.

After completing his training, Dr. Polk worked in two developmental centers in California before establishing his private practice in 1987. Today, he continues to serve individuals and families throughout Sonoma, Marin, Solano, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Contra Costa Counties.

Dr. Polk provides services wherever his clients live, learn, and work - including private homes, supported living environments, schools, community-based day programs, and employment settings. He believes treatment is most effective when it is integrated into a person's everyday life.

His comprehensive treatment process includes:

  • Conducting individualized assessments
  • Identifying instructional, behavioral, and self-regulation needs
  • Developing practical, evidence-based treatment plans
  • Working directly with clients to build core skills
  • Training family members, caregivers, educators, and support staff to consistently implement treatment strategies across environments

Dr. Polk's clinical approach combines the proven principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with strategies drawn from other psychological and therapeutic disciplines, creating individualized interventions that promote lasting growth and meaningful outcomes.

For more than four decades, Dr. Polk has dedicated his career to empowering individuals and the people who support them - helping each person build the skills, confidence, and independence needed to lead a fuller, more meaningful life.
